Wave Dude - 2D Wave Simulator
WaveDude is a 2D wave simulator for Windows 10/11 that allows you to create high-quality video of wave phenomena such as interference, diffraction and refraction.
Wave Dude started off as a creation tool for the wave animations displayed in the videos of Huygens Optics on YouTube.
It has been developed into a full application that allows you to experiment with various wave sources and objects.
Animations can be exported in a range of video formats.
The program is free software and is licensed under the GPL-3.0-or-later.
Wave Dude Next
Created by Alexander Gräf, this version takes the Dude to a whole new level! Alexander rigorously re-designed the user interface and created a much better user experience. In close cooperation with Huygens Optics, he also added a ton of improvements and many new features that the original ("Classic") version lacked.
Wave Dude Next contains the following features:
- A highly responsive and interactive simulation area;
- Clear and structured project- and object management;
- GPU acceleration (OpenCL);
- Uses xml-format (.wdproj) configuration files for project storage;
- Various types of wave sources (continuous, pulsed, coherent and incoherent);
- Supports import and use of external scene images;
- Many different object types modeled after optical components such as lenses, mirrors, zone plates and even optical logic;
- Unlimited probes to measure field and intensity as a function of time or location in the simulation field;
- Export of video files to a variety of video formats, including MP4, MPG, EXR, MOV and AVI.

Wave Dude 2D "Classic"
This is the original version of Wave Dude made by Jeroen Vleggaar as featured in the YouTube video. Are you into awkward flow, a retro interface and limited functionality? Then Wave Dude Classic is the perfect choice for you! Its development is currently discontinued due to the publication of Wave Dude Next, but it can still be downloaded.
Wave Dude 2D "Classic" contains the following features:
- Various types of wave sources (continuous, pulsed, coherent and incoherent);
- Supports import and use of external scene images;
- GPU acceleration (OpenCL);
- Supports sources embedded in an external image as well as source objects.
- Supports simple and composite wave sources (coherent directional / incoherent);
- Maximum of 2 field / intensity probes;
- File output management of video- and image files created within a specific project;
- Export of MP4 video format with user defined quality setting.
